Kalene Engel
A native of Fountain City, Wisconsin, Kalene is a 1990 Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Winona State University Paralegal Program. Following her graduation, she began her legal career as a personal injury paralegal at Suk Law Firm in Rochester, Minnesota, where she handled hundreds of personal injury cases. In the Fall of 1993, while continuing to work as a paralegal at Suk Law Firm in Rochester, Minnesota, Kalene began commuting from Winona to evening classes at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. While at law school, Kalene received numerous academic and achievement awards, including the prestigious Burton Legal Writing Award for excellence in legal research and writing. In June of 1997, Kalene graduated as valedictorian of her law school class of 240 students.
After honing her skills as an Associate Attorney for three years at Suk Law Firm, in November of 2000, Kalene started Engel Law Office in Winona. Since 1999, she has taught a variety of law-related courses at Winona State University including Insurance Law; Legal Research and Writing; Substantive Law & Ethics and Civil Procedure. In 2001, Kalene was named a Rising Star in the Law by Minnesota Law & Politics magazine. In addition to her law practice and teaching activities, Kalene also serves as a Volunteer Attorney for Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS) and has been instrumental in developing the Pro Se Divorce Clinic. Based upon her extensive volunteer work, Kalene was awarded the 2005 Third Judicial District Pro Bono Award. In the Fall of 2005, she was awarded the "Outstanding Woman in Government Award" from the Winona Women in Business Group. In August of 2005, Kalene was featured in a Minnesota Lawyer article for her skills in achieving a $900,000.00 recovery for the relatives of a 58-year old homemaker who was killed in an automobile accident near Preston, Minnesota. In March of 2008, Kalene was hired as the Coordinator for the Winona County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council brings together the participating agencies in the criminal justice system with representatives of local governments and the public. The Council seeks to assure for Winona County a criminal justice system that is fair and just, that provides for the public's safety, offers real opportunities for individuals to change the direction of their lives through rehabilitation, and makes the best use of the public's funds.
